If you’re considering whether to buy the entry-level or the higher-end model, our Speedmark 8 results show that the $799 model was 25 percent faster overall, with the biggest gains being in MathematicaMark and Cinebench CPU, which were 78 percent and 53 percent faster, respectively, than the new $599 Mac mini. On the other hand, the previous high-end model, with its discreet AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics, was faster on GPU-intensive tests, like Portal 2 (9 percent more frames per second) and Cinebench OpenGL (24 percent more frames per second). MathematicaMark was 78 percent faster on the new system, Cinebench CPU tests took 53 percent less time to complete, and HandBrake was 24 percent faster than the old model. The older system took nearly three times as long to complete our Photoshop action script.Īs you’d expect, processor-intensive tests that can use all four cores (and eight virtual cores, thanks to the Core i7’s Hyper Threading technology) showed the new high-end Mac mini to be much faster than the 2011 high-end Mac mini with a dual-core 2.5GHz Core i5 processor. The 2012 Mac mini was 68 percent faster and finished the Cinebench CPU test in half the time of the 2010 model. We also looked at the performance differences between the new low-end model and a mid-2010 entry-level Mac mini with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The new Intel HD Graphics 4000 helped the 2012 low-end Mac mini beat last year’s system by 60 percent in the Cinebench OpenGL test and by 27 percent in Portal 2.

Have more questions? Let us know – a MacStadium sales engineer would be happy to help.In our testing, we found the new $599 Mac mini to be 31 percent faster overall than its predecessor. The 599 Mac mini gets you a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM (which you can upgrade yourself, likely for less than it costs to buy more when you buy the machine), Intels.

However, since you have root access to all of your MacStadium infrastructure, you can install Big Sur to any machine when you’re ready. Note that it might take us a couple of weeks after the release to stage minis with Big Sur pre-installed for instant activation. I use the Mac as a headless music server connected to a Weiss Minerva DAC, running iTunes and Audrivana. Can you upgrade CPU on 2018 Mac mini While the RAM in the previous-gen Mac mini from 2014 was soldered to the logic board, the new Mac mini has user-upgradeable RAM, as discovered earlier this week. We currently have several 20 Mac mini configurations that are Big Sur compatible, and we’ll be offering new M1 minis very soon. I am considering an upgrade to the newest Mac mini 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 4GB memory from an older Mac mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core duo with 2 GB of memory. In most makes of Mac Mini you can’t upgrade the processor for models released since 2009, processors have been soldered onto the motherboard.

To prevent any potential loss of data, we recommend that you either don’t update your 2012 Mac minis, backup your data before you do an update (this advice applies for any update!) or reach out to us about upgrading to later model Mac minis. The macOS 11 boot loader doesn’t work natively with the 2012 and older hardware and that means there is no recovery from this - nothing short of a complete wipe and reinstall of the correct OS, or pulling the drive mounting via external USB/thunderbolt sled and pulling your data off would bring the machine back to life. Our senior data center technician, Justin Weathersbee, found that after installing Big Sur on a 2012 Mac mini, the machine wouldn’t boot. This incompatibility with 2012 minis was confirmed during our beta testing. We knew from the get-go (thanks to 9to5Mac for sharing a compatibility list!) that Big Sur will be compatible with only 2014 and later Mac minis. We’ve been testing the macOS 11 betas from the very beginning to provide you with the best information and we have a word of caution for 2012 and earlier Mac minis. We know you’re thinking about updating your machines ASAP. Like most of you, we’ve been anticipating the launch of Big Sur - and it’s finally here.
